If you frequently get mild to severe headaches, you are not alone. In fact, nine out of 10 people suffer from headaches. Headaches can last anywhere from a few minutes, up to weeks! Some are occasional, some more frequent, and more severe headaches are sharp and painful to the point of causing nausea.
There are several different types of headaches, each of which can be treated by a Honolulu chiropractor. Therefore, if you suffer from any of the following types of headaches, it may be time to visit your local chiropractor.
Migraine Headaches
Many people tend to call an intense headache a migraine, but a true migraine sticks to some exact criteria. A migraine is a condition that can be described as a recurring headache that sometimes lasts up to 72 hours, or three days. Typically, migraine symptoms include moderate to severe unilateral pulsating pain, light sensitivity, and nausea. Some people that have migraines will even experience a neurological symptom known as an aura before getting a migraine. This symptom usually takes the form of visual disturbances or other sensory disturbances.
Cluster Headaches
Cluster headaches are recognized as sharp, non-throbbing pains that are experienced behind the eyes. While various studies suggest migraines are more common in women, men between the ages of 20 and 40 are the most common recipients of cluster headaches. This type of headache produces severe pain around the eyes or along the side of the head. The intense pain can even create a sense of restlessness or agitation during the pain.
Tension Headaches
A tension headache is probably the most common headache type that people experience. Some of the common characteristics of a tension headache include a feeling of pressure or tightness, bilateral location, mild to moderate pain that can last anywhere from 30 minutes to one week. While these headaches are not commonly known to cause nausea or vomiting, they may include sensitivity to both light and sound.
These are just three common headaches out of more than 150 types of headaches recognized by the International Headache Society. Doctors often treat headaches by recommending over-the-counter medications or prescribing painkillers and muscle relaxers to block the pain. However, with prescription medications, there may be many adverse side effects that can further get in the way of your daily activities. Over-the-counter medications may also have risks, since overuse can cause liver damage and, ironically, more frequent headaches. With chiropractic care, headache pain is not simply masked, but it is treated through spinal adjustments, massage therapy, and other non-invasive,non-medication therapies.
